Recently, during the last Borough Council meeting Media Borough Council candidate and Republican Chairman Michael Straw used the words “subsidized housing” in a discussion with Borough Council regarding their future affordable/subsidized housing plans in the Borough.

Council President Brian Hall responded by stating: “Frankly the term subsidized housing is a racial dog whistle and those who continue to use that are using that intentionally and shamefully. They should not be proud of themselves.”

This quickly resulted in residents questioning Councilman Hall for his statement, including Michael Straw a Republican candidate for Council and the only individual to have said the words “subsidized housing” during the meeting PRIOR to Councilman Hall making his statement. Mr. Straw stated that “I can’t believe you would try to say I’m a racist.” He then asked Brian Hall for an apology which Councilman Hall said: “You will not get one from me Mr. Straw.”

This lack of decorum by Council President Hall is disturbing and yet again shows why there needs to be different perspectives on our Borough Council. If you find Councilman Hall’s remarks to be out of character with how our Borough leaders should behave in public meetings we ask that you send an email to the Borough Council telling them that they expect more from our Borough leaders and call on Councilman Hall to consider stepping down from his role as Borough Councilman.
